Hattiesburg–
The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music will host
its first guest recital of the new academic year Oct. 6 with saxophonist
Wildy Zumwalt, a professor of saxophone at the State University
of New York at Fredonia.
His residency visit Oct. 4-6 will include a
master class Oct. 4 for students. He is a guest of the Southern
Miss saxophone studio, under the direction of professor Dr. Lawrence
Gwozdz.
“When I first met him, Wildy was an undergraduate
at West Texas State University,” Gwozdz said. “He flew
into New Orleans in order to get a ride to a saxophone workshop
at Louisville (Ky.) in 1986. We have remained in contact since that
visit.”
Zumwalt went on to complete a Master of Music
at the University of Michigan and a doctorate from Florida State
University. After serving as saxophone instructor at Northern Arizona
University for several years, he was appointed to his current position
at Fredonia—an institution from which Gwozdz graduated.
Assisted by pianists Lois Leventhal and Sunhee
Beak, Zumwalt will offer his 7:30 p.m. recital at the Mannoni Performing
Arts Center. His program includes works by von Borck, Knorr, Bozza,
Rorem, Lefanu, and Terzakis.
He will team with Gwozdz in the duo Dialog
I Krakowiak, written by former Southern Miss faculty member Michael
Kimber. Admission is free.
