Hattiesburg—Over
the past 19 years, Delta Tau Delta fraternity has hosted the Cystic
Fibrosis Sports Challenge at the University of Southern Mississippi.
With help from Pi Beta Phi sorority, more than $14,000 was raised
for the Mississippi Cystic Fibrosis Foundation March 25 through
the sports challenge, which was held on the Southern Miss campus,
as well as a community wide “Great Stride Walk.”
With 12 teams
involved in the challenge and 19 sponsors, the event was a huge
success, according to organizers of the event. “This year’s participation
is a landmark achievement for the Mississippi Cystic Fibrosis Foundation;
between Delta Tau Delta fraternity and Pi Beta Phi sorority, over
900 service hours were contributed,” said Brandon Moffett, a senior
architectural engineering major and co-chair for the event. “This
is a major contribution from the Southern Miss philanthropic community.”
Every year the
fraternity selects a different sorority to help host the event.
This year Pi Beta Phi was the selected chapter. “We were so happy
to help host the Sports Challenge and very proud to have raised
so much money for such a wonderful cause,” said Mimsie Lader, president
of Pi Beta Phi.
“We had over
250 people involved, representing 12 teams in the Delta Tau Delta
Cystic Fibrosis Sports Challenge and 300 walkers in the Great Strides
Walk,” said Jeff Keyseear, a Southern Miss senior political science
major who served as co-chair for Cystic Fibrosis Sports Challenge.
“With 19 community and business sponsors, our goal of $10,000 was
easily exceeded. Over $14,000 was raised, bringing our 18-year grand
total to more than $175,000.”
