Hattiesburg—The
University of Southern Mississippi has chosen a Moroccan mathematics
professor as the 2007 Fulbright Scholar and will today welcome a
senior researcher from Ukraine for a NATO research project in computational
mathematics.
Dr. Sergiy Reutskiy,
a senior scientist of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine,
will arrive at Southern Miss this afternoon and depart on May 2.
His visit is due in part to the NATO Collaborative Linkage Grant
awarded in 2004.
Reutskiy is
currently working on a NATO project titled “Boundary Meshless Methods
of Solving Large Scale Problems.” Dr. C.S. Chen, chair of Southern
Miss’ mathematics department, is spearheading the project, which
involves the United States, Portugal, Poland, Ukraine and Russia.
While at Southern
Miss, Reutskiy will collaborate on research with faculty members
and graduate students. Dr. Chen and Reutskiy also plan to use this
opportunity to complete their NATO final report, plus continue to
seek prospects for applying international research grants.
In April 2007,
Chen will welcome professor Ahmed Naji of the Department of Mathematics,
Faculty of Sciences and Techniques, Tangier, Morocco. For three
months, the Fulbright Scholar will present a series of seminars
and conduct research in computational mathematics with emphases
in environmental issues.
“Their visits
will not only promote the scholarly activity at Southern Miss, but
also increase the academic visibility and the exchange of cultural
activity of Southern Miss,” said Chen.
The Fulbright Scholarship program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals
abroad each year to lecture and conduct research in a variety of
academic and professional fields. The program is sponsored by the
U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
