Southern Miss First Friday Program Dedicated to Faculty Development
Hattiesburg—The
University of Southern Mississippi’s Learning Enhancement Center
(LEC) has dedicated the first Friday of each month in the spring
and summer semesters to meet faculty instructional design and technology
needs through the First Friday program.
Every first
Friday, the LEC lab, located in the International Center, Room 317,
is open to faculty on a walk-in basis. LEC staff will be on hand
from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to provide one-on-one assistance to faculty,
staff, and graduate assistants on any instructional design or technology
needs, ranging from how to create a PowerPoint presentation to developing
an online course. The LEC staff consists of instructional designers,
multimedia developers, and instructional technologies trainers.
“We are looking
forward to working with faculty to incorporate technology in their
teaching strategies,” said Sheri Rawls, director of the LEC. “So
many students are using technology in their everyday life that it
just makes sense to continue it in the learning process. Our instructional
designers and technology specialists can help develop interesting,
learner-centered activities that can get students more involved
in the subject matter.”
The next First
Friday program session is May 5. For more information about First
Friday, please contact the LEC at 266.5518 or lec@usm.edu.

Andy Narrell Joins Southern Miss Percussion in Concert
Hattiesburg—Andy
Narell is one of the most recorded pan players in the world and
an innovator of steel pan music. Bringing his own special style
back to the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi, Narell
will join Southern Miss percussionists in the Rhythms of Spring
concert at 7:30 p.m., April 22 at the Mannoni Performing Arts Center
Auditorium.
The concert
will feature the Percussion Ensemble, Steel Band, and, after a year’s
absence, the Samba Band, all under the direction of Dr. John Wooton,
associate professor of music in the School of Music.
Narell is probably
best known to American audiences as a musician who pioneered the
role of the pan in contemporary music. He's also a star performer
with legions of fans scattered from New York City to Soweto and
all points in between.
He has made
14 albums, some are his own and some are with performers such as
Marcus Miller, Chucho Valdes, and Bela Fleck. Narell is also a studio
ace—an audio technician who is intimately involved in recording,
mixing and mastering his own CDs. It's no accident that many audiophiles
use Narell's recordings to demonstrate how good their systems sound.
Tickets are
$10 (free for Southern Miss faculty, staff, students with valid
ID) and available through the Southern Miss Ticket Office at 601.266.5418
or 800.844.8425. Order online at www.usm.edu/tickets.

Loupe, performing a new solo, “Beam,” along with five student works.
At each semester’s
end, Studio 115 Dance Concerts showcase student-choreographed dances,
presented in an environment that is intimate and full of possibilities.
This semester’s concert features a dance about super heroes in search
of a disaster, a retelling of memory and loss, and a dance that
brings blues music to life. Other works feature popular music and
large groups with provocative themes.
Tickets are
sold at the door for $5 per person, with Friday’s performance a
“Pay What You Can Night.” Shows begin nightly at 7:30 p.m. For more
