HATTIESBURG -- In September 2005, the Southern Miss
Alumni Association announced it would partner with the Office of
the University Registrar to replace any diploma of Association
members lost or damaged due to Hurricane Katrina free of
charge.
While the deadline to contact the Alumni Association for diploma
replacement had been set for Dec. 15, 2005, the program has been
extended to March 31, 2006.
“Due to an overwhelming response we have decided to extend the
program,” said Jerry DeFatta, the Alumni Association’s associate
director for external affairs. “Requests for replacement
diplomas have been submitted consistently since Hurricane
Katrina, and we want to ensure that all affected alumni are
given an opportunity to participate.
“We hope the complimentary replacement of the diplomas is a
demonstration of our desire to help alumni make their lives
whole again.”
DeFatta said orders to replace nearly 400 diplomas were
submitted prior to the original deadline. Alumni who submitted
their request prior to Dec. 15, 2005, should receive their
replacement diplomas in March. Those who submit requests prior
to the March 31 deadline should receive their replacement
diplomas in July.
To take advantage of this opportunity, alumni residing in the
affected areas should contact the Alumni Association at
601.266.5013 and request a copy of the Special Circumstance
Request for Replacement Diploma Form or download the form at
www.SouthernMissAlumni.com.
Forms should be completed and returned to the Alumni Association
on or before March 31, 2006. All replacement diplomas will carry
the titles and signatures of current University and Board of
Trustees officials.
