HATTIESBURG
— The Golden Eagles Intertribal Society (GEIS) at the
University of Southern Mississippi will hold its Fourth
Annual Powwow March 10-12. The powwow will take place
on Loyalty Field, next to M. M. Roberts Stadium. In case
of bad weather, the site will be held in the Payne Center
on the Southern Miss campus. The powwow serves as a fund-raiser
for recruitment, retention, and scholarships for American
Indians at Southern Miss.
Joe
Bohanon, a faculty adviser to GEIS, said the powwow “provides
a wonderful opportunity for people both within and outside
of Native American cultures to enrich their understanding
of other cultures, diversify traditional perspectives,
build bridges and develop broad notions of community.”
The
powwow will feature gourd and intertribal dancing, dance
and hand-drum contests, as well as cultural presentations
and Indian arts, crafts and foods. There is no charge
to attend this event; however, donations will be graciously
accepted.
GEIS
President, Terry Williamson, said, “GEIS seeks to promote
awareness and appreciation of First Nations cultures through
formal annual events and informal social and educational
activities. The powwow combines all of these into one
event.”
