Passing of King’s Widow ‘Loss to Human Rights Movement,’ Says Historian

HATTIESBURG - Dr. Curtis Austin, co-director of the Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage and assistant professor of history at the University of Southern Mississippi, calls the passing of Coretta Scott King a loss to the human rights movement.

As a partner with her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King, during the Civil Rights Movement who maintained his legacy, Coretta Scott King is also credited by Austin due to her efficiency of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).

“Her leadership in both the Civil Rights Movement and Women’s Liberation Movement will be nearly impossible to replace as she brought name recognition and know-how to both movements,” he commented. “Mrs. King was an advocate of human rights.”

Austin has a growing reputation as a scholar of the black freedom movement. His book about the Black Panther Party will be published in 2006 by the University of Arkansas Press. He also has created an interactive CD-ROM, titled Ordinary People Living Extraordinary Lives: The Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi.
