Offer Tide Tables
OCEAN SPRINGS –Tables of Mississippi high and low tides are
available for 2006, compliments of the University of Southern
Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) and the Chevron
Pascagoula Refinery.
The tables provide information on tides for Pascagoula, Biloxi and
Bay St. Louis as well as times for rising and setting of sun and
moon. The three geographic areas are in one 36-page booklet. Tide
information for Pearl River at Pearlington, Horn Island Pass, Cat
Island and other areas along the Mississippi Gulf Coast is online at
www.usm.edu/gcrl/MStide.
"We are rebuilding our mailing list post-Katrina for the tide
tables," said Dr. William E. Hawkins, executive director of the GCRL.

Chamber Orchestra Serenades for Valentine’s Day
HATTIESBURG -- For the true romantic, the Symphony Orchestra at the
University of Southern Mississippi will present the Southern Miss
Chamber Orchestra in “Heartstrings: A Musical Valentine” concert at
7:30 p.m., Feb. 14 at Bennett Auditorium to complement Valentine’s
Day celebrations.
Featuring music typically associated with romance, the ensemble,
under the direction of Alejandro Marcelo Drago, will perform several
selections featuring School of Music faculty artists and student
soloists: Dr. Lawrence Gwozdz, saxophone; Dr. Maryann Kyle, soprano;
and Dr. Danilo Mezzadri, flute; as well as student soloists,
including conductor Drago, Joel Martinez and Luis Gustavo Alberto.
“The program was designed as a wonderfully romantic and classy
Valentine's Day event," said Dr. Jay Dean, music director for the
Symphony Orchestra at Southern Miss. “After a nice dinner, our
program is a perfect end to the day.”

Guest Euphonium Artist Performs at Southern Miss
HATTIESBURG -- The University of Southern Mississippi Tuba/Euphonium
Studio, under the direction of associate professor of music Richard
Perry, will present guest artist Jason Ham in a free concert at 6
p.m., Feb. 21 at Bennett Auditorium.
Currently in his third year as a member of the United States
Military Academy Band at West Point, N.Y., Ham has quickly
established himself as one of America's most active euphonium
soloists.
A graduate of the University of Georgia in Athens, Ham is in his
third year as a Yamaha Performing Artist. He is recognized as an
up-and-coming pioneer on the euphonium, having already taken the
instrument to many locations that have never seen the euphonium in a
solo role.
In October 2004, Ham was the first-ever euphonium player to appear
as a soloist with the People's Liberation Army Band of China. A few
months later, in July 2005, he presented the first-ever euphonium
recitals in Bulgaria and Macedonia.

Southern Miss Concert Band Performs Under New Baton
HATTIESBURG -- The University of Southern Mississippi Concert Band,
under the direction of new assistant director of bands Dr. D.
Bradley Snow, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 16 at
Bennett Auditorium. The program will include works by Alfred Reed,
John Philip Sousa, Norman Dello Joio and Elliot Del Borgo.
Snow joined the Southern Miss band staff in fall 2005 as director of
The Pride of Mississippi marching band, the Golden Eagle basketball
pep bands, and conductor of the University Concert Band. His
teaching responsibilities include the instruction of undergraduate
conducting, marching band methods, computer marching band drill
design, instrumentation and graduate band literature.
Snow also serves as the organizer of the All-South Marching Band,
All-South Drum Major and Color Guard Camp, and the All-South Concert
Band programs.

Category 5 Winds Blow in Concert
HATTIESBURG -- Category 5 Winds, formerly known as the Southern
Winds Woodwind Quintet and made up of School of Music faculty at The
University of Southern Mississippi, will present a concert at 7:30
p.m., Feb. 15 at Marsh Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.
The performers include Danilo Mezzadri, flute; Patricia Malone,
oboe; Gregory Oakes, clarinet; Kim Woolly, bassoon; and Kenneth
Ortlepp, French horn.
The evening’s program will feature Carl Nielsen’s “Quintet,” Gyorgy
Ligeti’s “Six Bagatelles,” and two Brazilian works--Osvalvo
Lacerda’s “Suite for Five” and Liduino Pitombeira’s “Something.”
Admission is free and open to the public.
