HATTIESBURG
– Chevis Swetman,
a University of Southern Mississippi College of Business graduate,
has been named American Banker's 2005 Community Banker of the
Year.
American Banker is a daily newspaper for the banking and financial
services industry. Its annual Banker of the Year Awards honor
individuals who set the highest standards of progress, innovation
and performance.
Swetman, president and CEO of the Peoples Bank in Biloxi, was
chosen for his leadership during the aftermath of Hurricane
Katrina. The Peoples Bank lost 16 branches to Hurricane Katrina,
and despite losing his own home, Swetman exuded Mississippi's
spirit of resilience when he moved his family into a conference
room in the bank's headquarters and brought in mobile offices
to serve as temporary branch offices.
He was one of three Gulf State Bankers to receive the prestigious
award for their roles in the Katrina relief efforts. Honorees
are selected solely by the editors of American Banker.
An extended profile of Swetman and the other 2005 honorees
can be found in the Dec. 1 edition of American Banker.
