HATTIESBURG -- The Department of Art and Design at the University of Southern Mississippi will present art work by guest artist Katherine Kadish Jan. 17 through Feb. 11 at the Museum of Art on the Hattiesburg campus.

An artist reception is planned from 4 to 6 p.m. on Feb. 9 with a gallery talk at 5 p.m.

Kadish, a native of Yellow Springs, Ohio, presents her paintings and monotypes in an exhibition called Borderlands.

"This exhibition was planned long before Hurricane Katrina changed the face of the landscape and the lives of so many people in this part of the country," the artist said. But, she feels "there are strange points of connection which occur" in the works chosen.

"All of these paintings and monotypes, which represent some of my work from the past few years, are about transformation, the transitory nature of material things, and the value of each moment we fully experience," she explained.

Color is the lifeblood of her work, followed by light and shadow, all elements that she describes as "impermanent and subject to context, time, weather and memory."

A small group of monotypes made following the devastation of Hurricane Andrew are included in this exhibition. "The term 'natural' disaster struck me as questionable, given that, as in Hurricane Katrina, so much of the damage was caused by human and bureaucratic confusion and misplaced priorities."

It was these pieces, due to the nature of the subject, that Kadish began to play with the breaking down of spatial boundaries.

The most recent paintings in the exhibition include the "Curtains" series and "House and Garden." Kadish said these works represent a "memory of and a yearning for 'place,' that connection to the visible and invisible world, which I believe all of my work represents."

Mark Rigsby, director of the Southern Miss Museum, calls this exhibition a "major show" for the south Mississippi area. "Having experienced so much change and transformations in recent months, our patrons will easily identify with the works of Katherine Kadish," he said. "It's a show not to be missed."

Kadish has had numerous solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally—from Seoul, Korea, to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, to Chicago, Ill. Her works have been included in public and corporate collections, including the The British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and the New York Public Library.

The Museum is located in the Fine Arts Building at the southwest corner of the USM campus. Admission is always free, and hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, please call 601.266.5200.
