HATTIESBURG – On Jan.16, the
nation will celebrate the life of the late civil rights leader
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. By serving the Pine Belt community,
the University of Southern Mississippi will remember the legacy
of the man who promoted equality, unity and self-empowerment.
This year's theme is "I have a Dream to Keep Hattiesburg
Clean." Beverly Commodore, City of Hattiesburg's chief
administrative officer, will kick off the day's events at 9
a.m. at Southern Miss' Pride field.
The group of volunteers will then travel at 9:30 a.m. to the
Mobile-Bouie area, the heart of the civil rights movement in
Hattiesburg in the 1960s, to aid in the city's ongoing mission
to beautify the community. The venture is apart of the Keep
Hattiesburg Beautiful project, a division of the Parks and Recreation
Department.
The volunteers will next join up with other Southern Miss student
organizations from noon to 2 p.m. to participate in an activities
carnival at Robertson Place apartments located on 201 Katie
Ave. in Hattiesburg. The carnival, also sponsored by the Family
Network Partnership, will include learning and fun activities
for area children to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.
King's day of remembrance will conclude with a celebration
ceremony at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, located in downtown Hattiesburg
at 6 p.m., titled "The Dream: Community of the New Millennium."
The ceremony will include performances by students from Mt.
Carmel School and Southern Miss.
"To have a successful future we must know and understand
our past," said Monica Robertson of Southern Miss' Office
of Community Service Learning. "Dr. King desired for all
people to come together for the common good. We hope that by
cleaning up Hattiesburg this year it will bring a diverse group
of people out to beautify this wonderful city."
