FEATURES SEMINAR JAN. 19

Featuring Economic Development for Low-Income Communities January 2006

HATTIESBURG – In a continuing effort to focus on best practices for Economic and Workforce Development post-Hurricane Katrina, the University of Southern Mississippi Department of Economic and Workforce Development continues its 2006 Web-based seminar series Jan. 17, featuring Southern Miss professor Dr. Mark Miller, who will present "Economic Development for Low-Income Communities."

The seminar, to be held Jan. 19 from 12 to 1:30 p.m., will examine the past and the future for economic development in low-income communities.

"In this seminar we will consider the fate of earlier 'big ideas' for low-income communities, as well as possible new prospects on the horizon," Miller said. "In particular, we will discuss the growing concept of 'social capital' and other aspects of economic and community networking."

Nationwide, more than 60 economic and workforce development professionals have already signed up to participate in the online webinar series, also sponsored in part by the university's Trent Lott Center for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship and the Jack and Patti Phillips Workplace Learning and Performance Institute (WLPI).

There is no charge for the first 250 participants that enroll.

"The series is intended to stimulate economic and workforce development throughout the storm-affected areas as well as to address the needs of communities and organizations nationwide," said Dr. Eric Parks, coordinator of the webinar series. "Many of the nation's top applied researchers have volunteered to facilitate a monthly program to explore best practices in rapid and sustainable economic and workforce development.

The entire series can be viewed as a developer's tool set that can be used on the job. These applied tools will facilitate increased employment, enhanced worker performance and the creation of organizational and community wealth."

TeraLearn.com Inc., an authorized Hewlett-Packard Education reseller, is supporting this series with online registration services and HP Virtual Rooms technology.

Participants must have a computer with Internet access and a separate telephone line.

"The WLPI offers certificates, master's degrees and doctoral programs in workplace learning and performance and is excited to leverage expertise to share with the community of practitioners who plan to participate," said Dr. Cyndi Gaudet, associate professor and director of the WLPI.
