Hattiesburg—Gordon Randolph “Randy” Emrick,
a broadcast production engineer with the University of Southern
Mississippi’s Broadcasting and Media Production Services, died Saturday
in Vicksburg. He was 53.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Wednesday at Edwards Baptist
Church in Edwards, where Emrick previously served as a deacon and
operator of the church’s lighting and sound equipment. Visitation
is set for Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Wright and Ferguson Funeral
Home in Clinton and again at 9 a.m. at Edwards Baptist Church prior
to the service.
Emrick served as engineer in charge of the university’s satellite
uplink services and was an instructor in the Southern Miss School
of Mass Communication and Journalism. He had completed work managing
the satellite feed from the Miss Mississippi Pageant Saturday just
prior to his death.
He first came to Southern Miss as a student, said Dennis Webster,
director of Southern Miss Broadcast Services, who said he was so
impressed with Emrick’s work that he asked him to assist his staff
in the broadcast production of Southern Miss sporting events.
“He was one of the nicest individuals you could ever meet, and
the rest of the staff felt the same way,” Webster said. “He will
be missed.”
Emrick, who earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southern
Miss, was a former alderman and volunteer fireman for the town of
Edwards. A resident of Petal, he also served as a deacon at Petal’s
Carterville Baptist Church.
“He was an extremely competent employee and a very nice person,”
said Dr. Gene Wiggins, director of graduate studies for the Southern
Miss School of Mass Communication and Journalism. “I know everyone
around here thought a lot of him. He’ll be missed as both a friend
and a colleague.”
Survivors include his wife, Kathy Bardin Emrick of Petal; three
sisters, Marianne Gregg of Long Beach, Jeanne Driver of Hockley,
Texas, and Kay Lowe of Tomball, Texas; a brother, Rusty Emrick of
Newman; and numerous other relatives.
