Scholarship Winner Calls Southern Miss ‘A Ray of Light
in My Life’
Gulfport—Angela Wuest, sophomore nursing student
at the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, has been awarded
the Staff Council Scholarship Award. In a submitted essay Wuest
calls the university “a ray of light in my life.”
“If it weren’t for Southern Miss, some of us would have had a
far more stressful experience,” said Wuest in her essay.
“(The university) was the first sign of structure I had immediately
following the storm (Katrina). It gave us hope, not just in that
the school could brush itself off and go at it again, but that we
as students could do the same.”
The Staff Council awards the student scholarship annually based
on proceeds from the Student Affairs Golf Tournament. The council
selected Wuest out of a number of applicants based upon faculty
recommendation, a submitted essay, and extracurricular activities.
Wuest is the second winner of the annual award.
