Hattiesburg—Two recent graduates of the
University of Southern Mississippi’s Business Technology Education
program earned recognition during competition against other students
from across the nation and world at the Future Business Leaders
of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) 2006 National Leadership Conference
in Nashville, Tenn., June 24-July 2.
Pamela Kay Scott of Yazoo City and Sky Thomas Kong of Waveland
represented Mississippi and Southern Miss at the 55th annual conference,
with Scott receiving first place in the Future Business Teacher
competitive event and Thomas receiving fourth place.
The competition is part of a competitive events program sponsored
annually by FBLA-PBL, an association for students pursuing business
and business-related careers. Individuals, local chapters, and state
teams compete in more than 40 events representing a range of leading
edge business, career, and leadership development activities. The
winners are selected from FBLA-PBL’s 250,000 members and have won
state and regional competitions to qualify for the national awards
program.
“I’m very proud of Pamela and Sky,” said Dr. Diane Fisher, assistant
professor of business technology education and Phi Beta Lambda chapter
advisor at Southern Miss. “This is the second time in three years
that we’ve had a first place winner at the conference in the Future
Business Teacher category, and I believe that speaks well of our
program at Southern Miss.”
The 5,500 delegates to the conference elect national student officers
and attend business and leadership workshops in addition to competing
in business and career skill events.
Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda, Inc. is a nonprofit
organization that prepares students for careers in business and
business education. Its 250,000 members and advisers in 15,000 chartered
chapters include students from the United States, Puerto Rico, the
Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Guam, the Cayman Islands, and Europe. Its
mission is to bring business and education together in a positive
working relationship through innovative leadership and career development
programs.
