HATTIESBURG—Season tickets for the 86th
season of Mississippi’s oldest symphony orchestra at the University
of Southern Mississippi are available to the public, according to
musical director Jay Dean.
In the orchestra’s recurring theme of “Bringing the World to Mississippi,”
the new lineup of stars to shine on the Bennett Auditorium stage--and
beyond--include a return performance by famed flutist Sir James
Galway, country legend Charley Pride, and a concert extravaganza
in the spring of 2007 with Pattie LaBelle and Dionne Warwick. The
season opens with a Southern Opera and Musical Theatre company performance
of the Broadway hit Godspell.
Dean sings high praises for the special guest artists as he continues
to promote season ticket sales.
“Our season is the ‘hottest ticket in town,’” Dean said. “We will
be performing great classical music, chosen for its beauty and artistry,
with artists of world-renowned stature. Also, we are branching out
our musical offerings to include other types of music with performers
of the highest caliber.”
Bringing an added dimension to the season, the orchestra teamed
with the Southern Opera and Musical Theatre Company (SOMTC) for
the 85th season and found it a quite successful partnership. In
addition to the opening season performance of Godspell,
the SOMTC will present Carmen in April 2007.
Dean and the symphony, with the assistance of season sponsor BancorpSouth,
have given its audiences once-in-a-lifetime concert events, including
classical music greats Plãcido Domingo, Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak
Perlman, Edgar Meyer and Joshua Bell.
The complete season includes the following:
- Godspell, Sept. 28, 30 and Oct. 1 at the Thad Cochran
Center
- Sir James Galway, with Lady Jeanne Galway, Symphony Gala, Oct.
10 at Bennett Auditorium
- Out of This World Nov. 14, with pianist Kevin Kenner,
who wowed symphony fans several seasons ago, returns to perform
the beautiful “Piano Concerto No. 2” by Johannes Brahms at Bennett
Auditorium
- Holiday Choral Spectacular Dec. 5, with the combined
voices of the Southern Miss Choirs and the symphony orchestra
in a holiday celebration
- Future Stars Feb. 1, 2007, featuring student winners
of the annual William T. Gower Competition in one of the most
popular events of the season
- Tango Valentino Feb. 14, 2007, offering a romantic,
pulse-pounding evening to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day
- Divine Indulgences March 8, 2007, an evening of Igor
Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms and The Rite of Spring, featuring
School of Music faculty artists
- Charley Pride March 31, 2007, an unforgettable concert with
the Sledge native who is country music's first African-American
star and has been one of the top 15 best-selling country artists
of all time
- Carmen April 12 and 14, 2007, a mainstay of the operatic
repertoire, popular with audiences all over the world
- United in Song May 5, 2007, a tribute to Tena Clark
and her music featuring special guest stars Patti LaBelle, Dionne
Warwick, and more
The 2006-07 Symphony season ticket packages range in price per
person from $200 to $250, based on seating preference.
