Hattiesburg—Southern
Arena Theatre (SAT) at the University of Southern Mississippi opens
the first of three plays in repertory June 29 with the fast and
foolish comedy The Game of Love and Chance by Marivaux.
Theater professor Larry Mullican is directing this wonderfully
contemporary translation by Stephen Wadsworth about an arranged
marriage, two sets of lovers, two sets of disguises, and a mischievous
Harlequin figure.
“This play has mistaken identities, so it very much complicates
the people who are falling in love,” Mullican explained. “One of
the conflicts in the play is being trapped into falling in love
with a person of a different class.”
Although excited to direct during the 30th anniversary season of
the summer staple at Southern Miss, Mullican is certainly no rookie.
He has been a part of each season since its inception.
Emily Brown, 23, of Cowan, Tenn., is a graduate student who plays
a sassy, intelligent and arrogant character in the play. “The show
is clever and definitely charming…full of surprises,” she said.
“It is sure to make you laugh and sigh.”
The Game of Love and Chance runs June 29-July 1, 8, 20,
25, and 28, with 2 p.m. matinees on July 16 and 23 in the Gilbert
F. Hartwig Theatre.
Tickets go on sale June 19. Call the Southern Miss Ticket Office
at 601.266.5418 or 800.844.8425 or order online at www.southernmisstickets.com.
Tickets also may be purchased at the theater box office one hour
prior to curtain time for each performance on a space available
basis.
In celebrating the 30th anniversary of SAT, costume shop supervisor
Fred Lloyd has been busy gathering previous season brochures and
posters but has not found promotional material for all years and
hopes the public could help in his quest.
“If any patron of SAT has old programs or posters and would like
to contribute to our collection, I ask that they contact me,” Lloyd
said. Call 601.266.4994 to offer items for the collection. Lloyd
plans to frame and display these items in the Theatre and Dance
Building on campus.
