Hattiesburg—Southern Arena Theatre (SAT) at the University of Southern Mississippi opens the second of three plays in repertory July 6 with the adventure story Around the World in Eighty Days.

Show director and assistant professor of theater Scot Mann said this play by Mark Brown is “an exciting and incredibly theatrical version,” based on the Jules Verne novel that includes a race against time, unexpected drama, intrigue and heroism. The play consists of a cast of six actors who will play over 30 roles.

Danielle Hicks, 22, of Starkville, is a recent Southern Miss graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater Performance. She is excited to be a part of the multi-tasking cast and proclaimed this show to be fun for the whole family. “This play is a fun, fast-paced show with a lot of quick scene changes and several different dialects,” Hicks explained. “For most of the show I play an Indian woman named Aouda, who is supposed to be a human sacrifice.”

The Brown adaptation has been produced in major regional theaters during the past two years. The SAT production, in fact, will be presented even before its New York City premiere next season.

“It’s been rewarding to see such a high level of professionalism in the theater students at Southern Miss and to know that many of them are now working in professional theater, film and television,” Mann said. “Fortunately for us, there is an exceptional group of these students who have chosen to share their talents through SAT.”

Mann, a member of the faculty for three years, will be leaving Southern Miss after SAT concludes to become the director of theater for Mercy University in Macon, Ga.

Around the World in Eighty Days runs July 6-7, 15, 19, 22, 27, Aug. 1 and 3, with matinees on July 9 and 29 at the Martha R. Tatum Theatre. Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m., while matinees begin at 2 p.m. Individual show tickets are $12 for adults; $10 for senior citizens, Southern Miss faculty and staff, and military; and $6 for students.

For tickets, call the Southern Miss Ticket Office at 601.266.5418 or 800.844.8425; order online at www.southernmisstickets.com. Tickets also may be purchased at the theater box office one hour prior to curtain time for each performance on a space available basis.

SAT is celebrating its 30th anniversary season, bringing another year of surprising and upbeat summer entertainment to the Hattiesburg area. The season is made up of three plays running in repertory — meaning all three productions run throughout the season in rotation.

For the anniversary year, however, SAT will offer more performances and venues by including extra matinees and a show in the Martha R. Tatum Theatre. For more information on the SAT season, go to www.usm.edu/arts.
