Hattiesburg—Gov.
Haley Barbour headlines the list of state and local political leaders
who will be guest speakers during the 59th session of the Mississippi
Girls State, June 3-9 at the University of Southern Mississippi.
Approximately
350 rising high school seniors from across Mississippi will get
hands-on education in government while immersed in a week full of
mock political campaigns, elections, party caucuses and rallies.
Gov. Barbour
will address all participants at 3:30 p.m., Monday, June 5 in the
Performing Arts Center. He will be followed later in the week by
Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck, Insurance Commissioner George Dale, Secretary
of State Eric Clark, and Congressman Chip Pickering. In addition,
a number of other city and county elected officials also will be
on hand for small group meetings during the week.
Sponsored by
the American Legion Auxiliary, Girls State provides a setting where
participants can learn about the workings of politics at all levels.
Those attending will learn about government operations, meet officials
and see democracy in action, said Director Lou Wilkerson of Bay
St. Louis.
Wilkerson and
a staff of nearly 50 counselors and other volunteers will oversee
the weeks events that begin with delegates moving into Southern
Miss residence halls this Saturday. Each floor is organized into
fictitious cities and counties which make up the Magnolia state.
In addition
to political activities, the girls will participate in a glee club,
yearbook production, talent show and social time. During the session,
two delegates will be selected to represent Mississippi during the
American Legion Auxiliarys Girls Nation, to be held later this
summer.
