Hattiesburg—Alumni
of the University of Southern Mississippi often boast of the institution’s
tremendous history as it approaches 100 years since its establishment
in 1910.
If the 2006 class of
Legacy Scholars is indicative of today’s students, however, the
future will certainly only add to the institution’s magnificent
past.
For the third consecutive
year, five $1,000 scholarships have been awarded to the children
and grandchildren of Southern Miss graduates who are active members
of the Alumni Association. The recipients – all members of the 2006
freshman class – hold a mean grade point average of 3.81 and ACT
score of 28. They were chosen based on academic performance, extracurricular
activities and community involvement.
The 2006 class includes
Jared Lex Cobb of Hattiesburg, Nathaniel Grey Jones of Tupelo, Ashleigh
Claire Kellogg of Long Beach, Amanda Leigh Manning of Murfreesboro,
Tenn., and Kellis Lee McSparrin of Clinton.
“The Legacy Scholars
is a program which I am most proud that the Alumni Association orchestrates
on an annual basis,” said Bob Pierce, executive director of the
Alumni Association. “We began awarding Legacy Scholarships two years
ago, which means that this class represents a total of $15,000 in
scholarships over the short life of the program. Plus, the number
and amount of scholarships are going to continually grow as we move
forward into the future.”
Applicants for Legacy
Scholarships must be the children or grandchildren of a Southern
Miss graduate who is an active member of the Alumni Association,
be eligible for admission to Southern Miss as a freshman, and enroll
full time for the upcoming fall semester. Applications must be submitted
each year by March 15 to the Alumni Association office.
The scholarship program
is funded in part by support from the Shell Finish Line Golf Tournament
held each year at homecoming. This year’s tournament will be held
Friday, Oct. 13, at Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Hattiesburg.
