Social Work
Gulfport—Stephanie Sellier, a graduate student
in social work at the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast,
has become the first recipient of Southern Miss’ Betty Spencer Scholarship
Award.
Established in 2005 by friends and colleagues of Betty Spencer,
LCSW, the scholarship serves to honor Spencer’s years of exemplary
service and leadership in the social work profession and to the
University of Southern Mississippi School of Social Work. Spencer
requested that the scholarship be awarded each year to a Southern
Miss Gulf Coast graduate student in the Master of Social Work program
whose career goal is working with families and children. The selection
is made by members of the faculty.
Sellier received her bachelor’s in social work from Southern Miss
and worked for the State Department of Human Services before returning
to the university to pursue her Master of Social Work degree. She
has served as president of her class and maintained a high academic
standing while employed full time. Currently she is serving as a
supervisor with Project Recovery, a program offering crisis counseling

Southern Miss’ Lansford Co-Edits Book on Bush Presidency
Gulfport—Dr. Tom Lansford, associate dean of
the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast College of Arts
and Letters and an associate professor of political science, has
co-edited a book on the presidency of George W. Bush.
The Second Term of George W. Bush: Prospects and Perils, edited
by Robert Maranto (Villanova University), Douglas M. Brattebo (Institute
for Educational Leadership) and Lansford, was published by Palgrave
Macmillan, June 2006.
The book explores the phenomenon of second-term presidencies and
places George W. Bush in a comparative perspective by exploring
the political, institutional and policy implications of Bush’s second
term. Dr. Lansford co-authored the introduction and co-authored,
with former Southern Miss graduate student Jack Covarrubias, the
chapter “The Best Defense? Iraq and Beyond.”
The book is the result of a conference on the Bush presidency convened
in January 2005 by Robert Maranto, Douglas M. Brattebo and Lansford
at Villanova University. The conference received widespread praise
for its depth and was broadcast on C-Span.
Among the endorsements for the book, Louis Fisher of the Congressional
Research Service and author of Presidential War wrote that the book
contained “timely, illuminating, and perceptive essays. Prominent
scholars dig deep to explore the likely prospects for Bush in his
remaining years in office.” Noted presidential scholar James Pfiffner,
George Mason University, and author of The Strategic Presidency
and The Character Factor, wrote “From White House veteran Bradley
Patterson, to well-established political scientists, to young up-and-coming
presidency scholars, the editors have put together an insightful
set of perspectives on the Bush presidency. If you want a guide
to Bush’s second term, this is it.”
