Lochhead Receives National Merit Award from Society of
Cosmetic Chemists
Hattiesburg—Dr. Robert Lochhead, professor of
polymer science at the University of Southern Mississippi, will
receive the Society of Cosmetic Chemists’ National Merit Award Dec.
8 during the society’s Annual Meeting and Technology Showcase at
the New York Hilton Towers and Hotel. The award recognizes the recipient’s
distinguished contributions, achievements and service to the society.
Dedicated to the advancement of cosmetic science, the Society strives
to increase and disseminate scientific information through meetings
and publications. By promoting research in cosmetic science and
industry and by setting high ethical, professional and educational
standards, the society also pursues the goals of improving the qualifications
of cosmetic scientists and furthering the interests and recognition
of cosmetic scientists, while maintaining the public’s confidence
in cosmetics products and services.
Lochhead has previously served as chair of the Southern Miss School
of Polymers and High Performance Materials and as dean of the university’s
College of Science and Technology.

Department to Host ‘Hula Day’ July 20 in Hattiesburg
Hattiesburg—ACCESSRecreation at the University
of Southern Mississippi, along with the city of Hattiesburg Recreation
Department, will host its annual “Hula Day,” an inclusive day camp
for youth ages 6-12 that includes Hawaiian-themed activities. Refreshments,
games and swimming will be part of the fun at the C.E. Roy Community
Center, located at 300 East 5th St., just off of Main Street in
downtown Hattiesburg.
Participants must call 601.266.6223 to preregister for this event
by July 13. No walk-ins accepted. Those planning to take part should
bring swimsuits, sunscreen and towels.
Moore Among News Staffers Helping Sun Herald Earn Pulitzer
Prize for Hurricane Katrina Coverage
Hattiesburg—University of Southern Mississippi
alumni Felecia Moore of Hattiesburg, a 2000 graduate of the university’s
journalism program, was among the news team at The Sun Herald
newspaper in Biloxi that helped the publication win the Pulitzer
Prize, the highest award in journalism, in the Public Service Category
for its coverage of the impact of Hurricane Katrina.
The Sun Herald shared the award with the New Orleans Times-Picayune
newspaper.
Moore, a copy editor and page designer at the Columbus (Ga.) Ledger-Enquirer,
has also worked at the Hattiesburg American and the Lafayette
(La.) Daily Advertiser.
