HATTIESBURG—The Southern Miss Repertory Dance Company will present its Spring Dance Concert at 7:30 p.m. each evening March 23-25 at the Mannoni Performing Arts Center. The concert consists of eight dances created by faculty and dance majors.

The dances combine to reflect the diversity of artistic perspectives that the dance program has displayed over the years.

Associate professor Stacy Reischman has created a new work based on basketball. “I tried to capture the spontaneity and physicality of sport, specifically basketball,” she explained. Court Dance is accompanied by an original score composed by Todd Reischman.

Traceforms, choreographed by associate professor Shellie C. Nielsen, uses the concepts of flying, falling, and changing relationships throughout her work. Music for this work is by DJ Shadow. Nielsen called this work “a true collaboration between the choreographer and her cast. Each dancer contributed imagery and ideas, resulting from moving within the piece, that are uniquely their own as well as the collective.”

Assistant professor Julie Hammond's work, Let Me Count the Ways, is homage to the many stages of love. The music and the movement combine many styles, bringing this story alive and welcoming the audience to recall their own experiences.

Visiting guest artist in dance, Sarah Carlson, presents Portal, a new dance that investigates multiple layers of experience. Rolling doorframes provide an intriguing architectural texture to the space that gradually evolves into a kaleidoscope of discovery.

Unraveling, choreographed by dance major Shelley Manry, emphasizes the athletic beauty of movement through the work of featured dancers Kimmie Allen and Kristin Marlette. The dance focuses on athletic and technical form.

Tickets for each show of the series are $6 for students; $10 for Southern Miss faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens; and $12 for general admission. For tickets, call the Southern Miss Ticket Office at 601.266.5418 or 800.844.8425. Order online at www.usm.edu/tickets.
