Hattiesburg – Five undergraduate students are recipients this year of scholarships from the Center for Financial Services in the College of Business at the University of Southern Mississippi.

The Center provides a maximum of five scholarships to finance majors each year. These scholars maintain office hours in the Center and participate in a variety of research projects designed to develop a stronger understanding of personal finance and investing.

The 2005-06 scholarship recipients are as follows:

Tyler Brady, a junior banking and finance major from Terry, is working on a project that explores stock market reactions to “expert” announcements where there really isn’t any new information provided. He is the son of Ginny and David Bates of Byram and Mark and Yvonne Brady of Brandon.

Patrick Cannon, a senior personal financial planning major from Diamondhead, is developing an annual report for the Student Investment Fund. He is the son of John and Alisa Cannon.

Jerry Gordon, a junior banking and finance major from Meridian, is working on a paper discussing techniques for managing concentrated portfolios. He is the son of Neal Pou and Brenda Gordon-Pou of Meridian.

Justin Oswalt, a senior marketing and personal financial planning major, is researching the use of 529 College Savings Plans in estate planning. He resides in Purvis with his wife, Nicole, and is the son of Lee and Robin Oswalt of Hattiesburg.

Laura Read, a senior banking and finance major from Hattiesburg, is completing the Center’s student credit card debt research project and hopes to demonstrate that some students are actually making a good financial decision to take on some credit card debt if it ultimately leads to positive future cash flows. She is the daughter of Randy and Susan Read.

The Center for Financial Services prepares students for careers in the financial services industry and helps meet the demands for employees knowledgeable in a full range of financial services. The Center’s lab houses a student trading room that provides an active learning environment for finance students.
