HATTIESBURG—On
Friday, March 24, the College of Health at the University of Southern
Mississippi will present the 2006 David J. Fine Distinguished Lecture,
featuring Dr. Rosemary Luquire of St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System
located in Houston, Texas.
Luquire, who serves as St. Luke’s senior vice president, chief nursing
officer and chief quality officer, will discuss “Evidence-Based
Practice in an Age of Consumerism” from 1-2:15 p.m. at the Shelby
Freeland Thames Polymer Science Center Auditorium. Luquire’s lecture
will focus on evidence-based practice and how it relates to research
and the nursing curriculum.
Under Luquire’s
leadership, St. Luke’s has become the first Magnet-designated hospital
in the southwestern United States. Less than 3 percent of all hospitals
nationwide have received Magnet designation, which recognizes exceptional
patient care and nursing excellence.
A graduate of
Emory University, Luquire earned her doctorate from Texas Woman’s
University and her master’s degree in nursing from the University
of Texas Health Science Center, where she continues to serve as
a clinical associate professor. She is a fellow in the American
Academy of Nursing and serves as a commissioner for the Magnet Commission
in Washington, D.C.
The David J.
Fine Distinguished Lecturer Series brings scholars to campus who
can speak across disciplinary boundaries of the College of Health.
The series honors the accomplishments of Dr. Fine, who is the chief
executive officer of St. Luke’s. Modern Healthcare recently
named him one of the “100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare” as
he has 20 years of experience as the CEO of medical school teaching
hospitals across the country.
