Hattiesburg
– Dr. Barbara Carpenter, executive director of the Mississippi
Humanities Council (MHC), and MHC assistant director Carol Andersen
will conduct a workshop at the University of Southern Mississippi
on March 24.
Southern Miss
faculty and representatives from other nonprofit humanities organizations
in the Pine Belt area are invited to attend this session. The seminar
will be held in Union Room B on the Southern Miss campus in Hattiesburg
from 10 a.m. until noon. The workshop is free, but you must register
by March 17.
Carpenter will
summarize MHC objectives, discuss MHC programs and funding, and
review the application process and proposal preparation guidelines.
At the conclusion of the presentation, she and her staff will take
brief meetings with attendees who wish to confer about specific
project ideas. Participants who wish to schedule a short appointment
are asked to indicate this on their registration form and to submit
a brief abstract by March 17.
MHC is a private
nonprofit corporation funded by Congress through the National Endowment
for the Humanities to provide public programs in traditional liberal
arts disciplines to serve nonprofit groups in Mississippi. The Council
supports numerous activities throughout our state that promote and
advance the humanities, which include the study of such subjects
as language, literature, history, archaeology, law, philosophy,
ethics, criticism, theory, history of arts, and cultural heritage.
MHC sponsors
many groups in the region, including libraries, museums, colleges
and schools, community and cultural organizations, and public agencies.
