Hattiesburg—After Hurricane Katrina delayed the University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra’s original Oct. 4, 2005, date with Grammy Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell, the April 3 concert will now cap off a season of exceptional concerts and events, despite the unusual weather aftereffects.

Under the baton of music director Jay Dean, the orchestra has much anticipated yet another concert with one of the world’s most sought-after classical artists. After performing with the likes of Placido Domingo, Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Sir James Galway and Edgar Meyer, the university’s Symphony has enjoyed a national reputation for its ability to attract musical stars of the highest caliber.

“Joshua Bell is a young version of Itzhak Perlman,” Dean said. “His playing is extraordinary and audiences love him.”

Dean recounted his recent visit to the Mostly Mozart Festival held in New York. “I watched a packed house at the Lincoln Center give two lengthy standing ovations to Bell after his performance.”

“He is an exciting, exhilarating performer to watch. Joshua Bell draws deeply upon his emotions in his playing. It’s not just audible emotion, but his love for what he does is visually apparent in his performances.”

The evening’s program will include Tchaikovsky’s “Violin Concerto” and “Symphony No. 6.”

Bell has been captivating audiences around the globe for more that 20 years. Known for his poetic musicality, he first came to national attention at age 14 when he made his highly acclaimed orchestral debut with Ricardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

That performance, soon followed by his Carnegie Hall debut, an Avery Fisher Career Grant and a recording contract, created a sensation that spread throughout the music world.

Now in his 30s, Bell has performed with nearly every leading symphony orchestra and conductor, recorded 27 albums and earned the rare title of classical superstar. “Bell has evolved from a technical whiz to a true artist and intellectual whose music feeds both your brain and your heart,” said Newsweek.

The Symphony’s 2004-05 season is sponsored by BancorpSouth. Limited tickets for the 7:30 p.m. concert at Bennett Auditorium are $49/$39/$29 and may be purchased at the Southern Miss Ticket Office by calling 601.266.5418 or 800.844.8425. Tickets may also be ordered online at www.usm.edu/tickets.
