Hattiesburg—Dr.
Philip C. Kolin, an English professor at the University of Southern
Mississippi, has published the eighth edition of his highly respected
business-writing textbook Successful Writing at Work with
Houghton Mifflin.
The textbook,
aimed at improving business, professional and technical writing
classes nationally, builds on the strengths of the previous seven
editions while addressing modern communication needs of international
audiences.
Paying greater
attention to ethics and business writing, the text offers enhanced
discussions of technology in workplace writing—from blogs to document
design--and includes a new chapter, "Doing Research for School
and on the Job,” which focuses on effective interviewing and research
strategies.
Kolin’s book
has been highly praised for helping students write and design clear,
well-organized and readable documents. Reviewer Brenda Aghahowa,
a professor from Chicago State University and one of 18 reviewers
hired by Mifflin to study and offer feedback on the publication,
calls Kolin’s book “the bible of business writing textbooks.”
Another reviewer,
J. Andrew Paul from the University of Denver, told his students:
"Keep this book close at hand at your place of future employment.
It will give you the proper tools to meet the challenge of any situation
that may arise in the business community."
Often used as
a guideline for writing at various community colleges and universities,
including graduate programs in marketing, professional programs
in nursing and even a police academy, Kolin does extensive research
to update his material to reflect today’s writing needs.
"In 1980, when the first edition of Successful Writing
at Work was published, it was only 270 pages long with little
mention of technology,” Kolin said. “Today, the eighth edition is
768 pages, with up-to-date discussions of PowerPoint presentations,
e-mail security, designing online resumes, writing for a Web site,
and using search engines effectively."
Kolin is also an international authority on the plays of Tennessee
Williams, Edward Albee, Adrienne Kennedy, and for the last 12 years,
has served as the general editor of the Routledge Shakespeare Criticism
Series.
