HATTIESBURG—The University
of Southern Mississippi Department of Recreational Sports will
host the Mississippi Afrocentrik Dance and Drum Ensemble (MADDE),
in conjunction with Southern Fit Fest, March 4-5 at the Payne
Center.
Based in Jackson, MADDE emphasizes developing
a sense of African-American culture through music and dance. MADDE
was formed by Sherman Nunn Abdur-Razzaq, Chiquila Pearson and
Baba Ola Tunji, all from Chicago. Each moved to Mississippi separately
and met each other, agreeing their talents were needed by the
community. MADDE performances feature traditional African and
Caribbean dance and drumming, dramatic presentations, spoken word
and unique interpretations of African geared popular tunes.
MADDE will be leading Afrobics from 4:30-5:30
p.m. on Saturday, March 4. The Afrobics session of Southern Fit
Fest will be open to all current Rec Sports Rec Card holders.
