– The University of Southern Mississippi’s 2006 United
Way Campaign co-chairs on Wednesday saluted those who dug deep into
their pockets and opened their wallets to make donations, even after
enduring one of the nation’s worst natural disasters in Hurricane
Katrina, for helping the school surpass its fund-raising goal.
Campaign organizers
set a goal of $90,000 in support of the United Way of Southeast
Mississippi. Although there were concerns about the campaign’s ability
to reach that mark after the Aug. 29, 2005, storm, it was announced
during a ceremony at the University Commons that $100,288.72 was
the final tally raised by Southern Miss faculty, staff and students.
“We’re thrilled
to top our goal, especially when you consider the incredible support
our people showed for the hurricane relief efforts,” said Kameron
Dale, benefits specialist in the Southern Miss Department of Human
Resources, who served as co-chair for the campaign along with Dr.
Lou Marciani.
The College
of Education and Psychology won the College Champion competition
for the highest donation percentage among the university’s colleges;
the Office of the President won the Departmental/Administrative
Champion competition.
“I’m so proud
of the faculty and staff for their generosity, and at such a critical
time when the university was recovering from Hurricane Katrina,”
said Marciani, director of the Southern Miss School of Human Performance
and Recreation.
The United Way
of Southeast Mississippi provides support to more than 20 charitable
and human service agencies in Forrest, Lamar and Perry counties,
including the university’s DuBard School of Language Disorders,
the Children’s Center for Communication and Development, and the
Shafer Center for Crisis Intervention.
Dan Kibodeaux,
director of the United Way of Southeast Mississippi, thanked the
university community for supporting for the agency and said that
the United Way is playing an important role in assisting those impacted
by the storm. “Your support helps so many people in so many ways,
every day,” he said.
