Ocean
Springs—The University of Southern Mississippi's
Scott Aquarium encourages seventh- and eighth-grade science and
math teachers from south Mississippi schools to register for a 10-day
summer institute focusing on the math and science of natural disasters.
Participating
teachers will receive up to a $1000 stipend and free technology
tools to use in their classrooms. June sessions will be held in
Ocean Springs; July sessions will be held in Hattiesburg.
“We are inviting
middle-school science and math teachers to ‘team-up’ and experience
the science and mathematics of natural disasters,” said Dr. Shelia
Brown, coordinator of educational programs for the Scott Aquarium.
“Teams must consist of one seventh- or eighth-grade science teacher
and one seventh- or eighth-grade mathematics teacher from the same
school.”
To be eligible,
teachers and their principal commit to the summer institute and
a school-year component of in-school and online sessions. Teachers
will use technology tools and electronic visual aids during the
institute and leave with a SmartBoard technology system or equivalent
to take back to their school. Participating math teachers will receive
an external jump drive and a TI-84 graphing calculator and view
screen. Participating science teachers will receive an external
jump drive and a digital camera for use in their classrooms.
The summer institutes
are made possible through a $478,607 U.S. Department of Education
grant administered through the Mississippi Department of Education.
The institutes are offered in conjunction with South Mississippi
Science and Mathematics Partnership Program (SMP)².
Southern Miss
faculty Drs. Myron Henry, Sherry Herron and Sharon Walker are leading
the grant program that will help participants put into practice
new lesson plans integrating science and mathematics on the topic
of natural disasters.
The institute
is scheduled for June 12-16 and 19-23 at the Scott Aquarium interim
location at the university's Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean
Springs. The institute will be offered a second time July 10-14
and 24-28 on the Southern Miss campus in Hattiesburg.
