Hattiesburg—The
University of Southern Mississippi’s Office of International Programs
has selected 18 of the university’s top students for its study abroad
programs on semester or year exchanges for the 2006-2007 academic
year. The students were selected after an application and interview
process.
“I’m excited
to have such a wonderful group representing Southern Miss,” said
Alex Kenner, coordinator of international programs. “They’ll be
great ambassadors for us.”
The students
will be placed in nine different partner universities around the
world, including Alcala, Exeter, Jaen, Keele, Orleans, Perpignan,
Swansea, UADY and UVIC.
While studying
abroad, participants take courses for credit that apply to their
ongoing degree program at Southern Miss. Students who study in countries
where English is not the native language receive instruction in
the language of the host country. Students pay tuition as they normally
would through Southern Miss, and their financial aid is applied
toward the cost of the international program.
After the exchange
program, placements are determined and students begin a series of
orientation sessions to prepare them for their programs abroad.
Typically, these sessions involve discussions about educational
and cultural differences, as well as logistical issues such as financial
aid, travel arrangements and housing.
“I’m excited
about taking part in this program,” said Mary Zitnik of Loxley,
Ala., who will spend a full academic year abroad at the University
of Wales in Swansea. “I’ve always wanted to travel abroad, and I
know this opportunity will be a chance to see what I can make of
myself in a completely new culture and environment.”
Other Southern
Miss students participating in the exchange program this year and
their host universities include Steven Tadlock, Alcala, Madrid,
Spain; Chad Bush, Exeter, England; Sommer Thornton, Jaen, Spain;
Rachael Huddleston, David Merkosky and Brittany Bolden, Keele, England;
Annilee Newton, Samantha Leake, Janel Cohen and Kaitlin Commiskey,
Orleans, France; Elaine Howard and Andrew Bartran, Perpignan, France;
Jeremy Graham, Katherine Looney, Brian Williams and Kevin Babb,
University of Swansea; and Evan Comeaux, Victoria, British Columbia,
Canada.
The Office of
International Programs offers a variety of study abroad options
in addition to semester and year exchanges, and more than 700 students
participate in these programs annually in 30 countries worldwide.
Short-term study abroad programs give students opportunities for
academic, cultural and personal enrichment. Study abroad options
include the popular British Studies Program in London and the Caribbean
Studies Program in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, among others.
Another study
abroad option enables students to spend a semester in France at
The Abbey, which allows second-year students to study in rural France
while taking core Southern Miss classes in English.
