HATTIESBURG—Dr.
Diane J. Fisher, assistant professor in the University of Southern
Mississippi’s Department of Technology Education, recently received
the Mississippi Business Education Association Senior College/University
Business Educator of the Year Award.
“To be recognized
by your peers for this prestigious award is both encouraging and
humbling,” said Fisher. “As a business technology teacher educator,
my passion is to prepare students to become the best teachers possible.
This award has significant meaning in my capacity to serve as a
role model for my teacher candidates.”
The Business
Technology Education (BTE) program at Southern Miss prepares students
to teach in secondary or postsecondary education programs that equip
individuals with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and work habits essential
for initial employment in a technological environment, in both the
public sector and in private enterprise. Courses within the program
are available for all majors.
“Research indicates
the necessity of using technology to teach and to engage students
in learning,” Fisher said. “Today’s students embrace learning through
a technological view, which challenges educators to teach to a new
generation of learners. I see my role as a teacher educator modeling
technological instructional strategies for teacher candidates.”
Dr. Ed Mann,
a colleague of Fisher, said the department’s faculty and students
consistently win awards for their performance. “For a department
of our size, we receive many awards disproportionate to our numbers
at both the college and professional levels.
“Diane’s an
outstanding faculty member,” Mann said. “She demonstrates excellence
in the classroom.”
