GULFPORT—University
of Southern Mississippi Provost Dr. Jay Grimes will represent Southern
Miss President Dr. Shelby Thames during spring 2006 commencement
exercises May 12 in Hattiesburg and May 13 in Biloxi. Dr. Thames
is recovering from an upper respiratory illness and is unable to
attend the graduation ceremonies.
Dr. Grimes joined
Southern Miss in 1997 as dean of the Institute of Marine Sciences,
which later became the College of Marine Sciences in 2001, and as
professor of coastal sciences. He became provost in 2002, while
continuing to serve as director of the Southern Miss Gulf Coast
Research Laboratory.
Grimes will
be joined by Associate Provost Dr. Cynthia Moore in presenting diplomas
to graduates. Two separate commencement ceremonies will be held
at Reed Green Coliseum on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus,
the first at 2:30 p.m. followed by a 6:30 p.m. ceremony.
A Southern Miss
Gulf Coast commencement exercise will be held May 13 at 10 a.m.
at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum, where Dr. Grimes will join Southern
Miss Gulf Coast Associate Provost Dr. Pat Joachim in presenting
diplomas to graduates.
Approximately
1,600 students are scheduled to graduate from the university this
spring.
Southern Miss
graduate and Pass Christian native Sally Ann Roberts Craft, a popular
news reporter and morning anchor for WWL-TV in New Orleans, will
be the commencement speaker for all three ceremonies.
