In a ceremony Friday at the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Student Service Center in Gulfport, Miss., Southern Miss president Shelby Thames presented awards to select faculty and staff who were nominated for service to the university above and beyond normal performance of duty. After Hurricane Katrina, many faculty and staff members stepped beyond their usual roles to do whatever was necessary to help one another and rescue intellectual and real property of the university.
