Summer Program for Academically Talented Youth Application Deadline Extended

Hattiesburg—The University of Southern Mississippi has extended the application deadline for the Summer Program for Academically Talented Youth. The three-week summer residential program for seventh- through 10th-graders is scheduled for July 9 - 28. Courses offered include precalculus mathematics; human anatomy and physiology; forensic science, polymer science; and creative writing. Applications for the program will be accepted according to order of receipt. Southern Miss Student Artists Win Awards at Regional Competition

Hattiesburg—University of Southern Mississippi Department of Art and Design students were winners at the second annual Student ADDY® Awards, held April 21at the 7th District Spring Convention in Macon, Ga. The American Advertising Federation honored the most creative student advertising and design in 2005, including Jared Walters of Laurel with a gold in illustration; Jessica Sherman, also of Laurel, with a silver in logo design; and Jon Cornette of Hattiesburg with a silver in Ad/Insert Campaign design.

A total of 162 entries from 23 colleges and universities in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee were judged this year by three regional design professionals: Dale Irvin of Country Roads Magazine, Kevin Burke of LSU Sports Properties, and Amber Godwin of Watermark Design. The Student ADDY Awards represent the second tier of a three-tiered national competition conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation (AAF).

In all, AAF's 7th District awarded 55 Gold ADDY Awards and 21 Silver ADDY Awards, along with six Special Judges' Awards and one Overall Best of Show. Watkins College of Art and Design in Nashville, Tenn., had the most winning entries with 21 awards. All Silver and Gold ADDY winning entries will be forwarded to Washington, D.C., for judging on the national level.
