Gulfport—With
the school year quickly coming to an end, high school students are
rushing to finish projects, cram for finals, and of course, prepare
for prom. However, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, many girls
are unable to afford or even locate a dress for that special night.
Emily Lambuth
of Summit has been assisting in the collection of prom dresses for
various coastal towns. A junior majoring in medical technology at
the University of Southern Mississippi and a member of the Children
of the American Revolution (CAR), Lambuth has worked with the Illinois
chapter of CAR to make the effort a success.
The Illinois
chapter has been collecting dresses and is working with Lambuth,
who serves as president of the Mississippi chapter of CAR, to distribute
them as well as other supplies for schools on the Mississippi Gulf
Coast.
Lambuth recently
traveled to the coast to distribute the 250 dresses collected to
date. “Mississippi is known for its beautiful ladies. I wanted to
give back,” Lambuth said. “I just want them to smile again.”
Long Beach School
District superintendent Carrolyn Hamilton was contacted by Lambuth
for assistance in identifying students who could use the dresses.
Together, they coordinated a day for Lambuth, along with her parents,
to travel to the coast and distribute the dresses. Upon arrival,
Lambuth unpacked and hung each dress, displaying them for the students.
“Emily spent
so much time and worked so hard providing a memory for students,
she did not even know. She asked for nothing in return.” Hamilton
says. “Her unselfish act has added a wonderful memory to a group
of students who have experienced a year that no one could have ever
imagined.”
