Hattiesburg—The
commander and chief of engineers for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
will be on campus Tuesday, May 30 at the University of Southern
Mississippi, where he will be briefed on several of the university’s
programs and will give a public address about hurricane recovery.
The Southern
Miss School of Construction will host the occasion, where Lt. Gen.
Carl A. Strock will speak on hurricane recovery efforts in a 3 p.m.
presentation titled “Out of Chaos Springs Opportunity.” Strock also
will be briefed at 2 p.m. on initiatives in the university’s Construction
Engineering Technology and Polymer Science and Engineering programs.
Both the briefing and lecture are open to the public and will be
in the Polymer Science Research Center Auditorium on the Southern
Miss campus.
“This presents
a great opportunity for the university to show the important role
we play in hurricane recovery efforts in terms of manpower and rebuilding,”
said Desmond Fletcher, associate professor of engineering technology
and coordinator of construction programs. “We are educating construction
managers for an industry with a tremendous shortage of labor right
now. Because some of our courses are now available online, it can
be a particularly key educational outreach to the military.”
Strock is a
native of Georgia and holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering
from the Virginia Military Institute and a master’s degree in civil
engineering from Mississippi State University. He is a registered
professional engineer.
Strock’s extensive
military experience includes a six-month tour of duty in Iraq as
the deputy director of Operations for the Coalition Provisional
Authority. His past command assignments also include the 307th Engineer
Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, where he led the battalion through
Operation Just Cause in Panama and Operations Desert Shield and
Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
The U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers is made up of approximately 34,600 civilian and
650 military members whose engineers, scientists and other specialists
work hand in hand as leaders in engineering and environmental matters.
The Corps heads up a variety of civil works projects, offering disaster
response; designing and managing construction of military facilities
for the Army and Air Force; and providing support for other defense
and federal agencies.
