As April begins, I’m still on an emotional high from the marvelous inauguration celebration the university hosted for me. There are too many people to thank individually for the event that was frequently described as “flawless” and “magical.” I was deeply moved by the tireless efforts of the inauguration committee and the participation of so many students, faculty and staff members. My family and I offer our sincerest thanks.
Founders’ Day activities melded beautifully with inauguration events. I loved the awards ceremony and the swearing-in of our new Student Government Association officers. Many thanks go to outgoing president, Vince Fabra, for all his accomplishments and support. Vince is a talented young man who will make us proud wherever he goes. He is succeeded by an equally capable leader, Melissa Cirino. I look forward to working with her over the coming year as we move our university forward together.
Centennial Conclaves
The next once-in-a-lifetime event on campus will be our centennial celebration in 2010. Already, the Centennial Committee is hard at work. The group will begin hosting a series of town meetings in April, both in Hattiesburg and at our Gulf Park campus, to gather ideas and inspiration from campus, alumni and community members. See the schedule at www.usm.edu/centennial.
Eagle Fest 2008
Don’t forget our annual Eagle Fest weekend is April 12. We will have a weekend of baseball versus Arkansas State and our Spring Football Game under the lights for the first time on April 12. We’ll get our first peek at the style of new head football coach, Larry Fedora, and his coaching staff. It promises to be a festive event and a great night to be a Golden Eagle. See the listing of events here.
Spring is in full swing and here are some events happening around our university.

We’re rounding the turn
As the spring semester draws near to a close, the campus is blooming and students are buzzing outdoors, enjoying our historic campus. It is beautiful. As the sea breezes come across the Gulf Park campus, the beach roads are still under construction near the entrances, a sign of continuous progress on the beautiful Gulf Coast. We’re readying for another monumental occasion that is most important: graduation in May. Graduation will be celebrated on both the Hattiesburg and the Gulf Coast. Enjoy the spring!
