The Southern Miss English Department has had in continuous operation since 1982 a Writing Center where students receive intensive one-on-one tutoring in originating material as well as focusing and revising already-drafted writing. To enhance the services provided by the Writing Center, the QEP Leadership Team provided additional funding and support so that the center could extend its efforts further and serve more students from across all disciplines.

As part of this initiative, the QEP Leadership Team established a Writing Lab as a writing-dedicated computer lab outfitted with up-to-date computers equipped with writing and editing software. In summer 2008, the Writing Center and Writing Lab on the Hattiesburg campus moved to Cook Library and are combined into one comprehensive University Writing Center. The Writing Center on the Gulf Coast is housed in the Gulf Park Library.
