S.M.O.P. (Southern Miss Outdoor Programs) is bringing tons of fun along with new locations for trips such as hiking, rafting, camping and survival clinics.



Indoor Rock Climbing

Looking for a new and exciting way to spend your Saturday? Come out with SMOP for an afternoon spent on the indoor rock wall at Slidell Rocks! We will depart around 9:30 a.m. and return later that afternoon! Sign up at the Payne Center.

Hike Along Little Black Creek

Looking for a fun and healthy way to start your weekend? Put on your tennis shoes and some warm athletic clothes and join the SMOP staff for a beautiful morning hike along Little Black Creek!We will depart the Payne center at 9AM and return around 1 PM. Sign up for the trip in the Payne Center.

First Annual Fishing Rodeo

Polish your fishing rods, stock your tackle boxes! SMOP is hosting our first annual Fishing Rodeo! Grab a team of four friends and join us at Lake Thoreau for a morning filled with fishing, good memories, and prizes!

Crystal River Swimming with Manatees

Join SMOP as we swim with the manatees in Crystal River, Florida. In the winter hundreds of manatees congregate in the warm waters of the natural spring. You will have the opportunity to swim with and touch manatees with the guidance of a local tour guide.

We will depart from campus Friday (4/11) and return Sunday (4/13). Cost includes transportation, all meals except traveling meals, camping gear, and the cost of swimming with the manatees.

How do you go prepared into the wilderness for a fun-packed day? With tons of delicious and nutritious snacks! Come learn from nutritionist Dorothy Reynolds! Meet us in the Atrium of the Payne Center for a lesson on snack-packing!

Calling all bike riders! Join Jenny from Moore’s Bike Shop as she comes to the Payne Center to talk about basic bike maintenance, as well as how to fix your bike tire!

Snorkel Clinic & NAUI Skin Diving Certification

Coming on our manatee trip? Want to get oriented with snorkeling? Craving a NAUI Skin Diving Certification? This day is for you! Join our SMOP staff and Bill Powe as we spend the day getting certified! We will spend the morning in the Natatorium learning the basics of snorkeling, break for lunch, and then travel to Lake Thoreau to do open water snorkeling!

Geocaching 101

Ever wanted to learn how to geocache? Tonight is the night for you! Join Hub City Cachers as they come out and teach the basics of geocaching and then go out onto the Southern Miss Campus and find some caches that they have strategically placed!
