Sports Guidelines

TEAM GUIDELINES

Participants are allowed to play in ONE of the following divisions:

  • Fraternity and Sorority Division: Any individual playing under a fraternity or sorority name must be registered under that organization in the Greek Life office.
  • Independent Division: Any campus organization, faculty, staff or student may participate in the independent division.

Major Sports Scheduling Guidelines

  • Regular Season: Round-robin format within divisions
  • Playoffs: Single elimination bracket with divisions
  • Women's Classification:  Sorority and Women's Independent teams
  • Co-Rec Classification: Co-Recreational teams
  • Division I Classification:  DI Men's Independent and Frat A teams
  • Division II Classification: D2 Men's Independent, Frat B and Frat C teams
  • All University Championships: D1 Men's Independent vs. Fraternity, Independent Women vs. Sorority, and Co-Rec

Minor, Individual and Dual Sports Scheduling Guidelines

  • Tournament:  Varies per sport (single elimination, double elimination or round-robin then single elimination)

The Intramural Sports Coordinator reserves the right to reclassify any team after completion of the regular season.

 

 

INDIVIDUAL GUIDELINES

Each individual must present a current Southern Miss ID or active REC card and photo ID in order to participate in any Intramural Sports activity. If an individual cannot provide valid identification, that individual will not be allowed to participate.

University Status

  • All undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at the university are eligible for Intramural Sports competition. All faculty and staff are required to purchase a REC card to participate in Intramural Sports.

Summer Eligibility

  • All undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in summer courses at the university are eligible to participate. Students enrolled in the previous spring semester, who have not graduated, and intend to enroll in the fall, are eligible to participate provided that they purchase a REC card.

Co-Rec Activities

  • All students, faculty, staff and their spouses are eligible to participate. All spouses must purchase a REC card to participate in Intramural Sports.

Eligibility Investigation

  • Upon submission of a Player Eligibility Protest, the Intramural Sports staff will investigate the eligibility of the participant(s) in question.

Professional Athletes

  • Students ineligible for varsity competition because of professional rank are prohibited from competition in the intramural sport(s) or related sport(s) in which they have professional standing.

Student Athletes

  • Any current college athletes who practice with a college during the current academic year will be ineligible to participate in their or a related sport. This includes prop team members, redshirt athletes and transfer students from any college or university. University rosters will be consulted in dealing with player eligibility.

          Related Sports:

          Basketball - Basketball, 3-on-3 Basketball, Dunk Competition, and Basketball Festival

          Football - Flag Football, 4-on-4 Flag Football, and Punt, Pass, & Kick

          Soccer - Soccer

          Softball/Baseball - Softball and Wiffleball

          Tennis - Tennis

          Volleyball - Volleyball, Sand Volleyball, and Wallyball

               

Sport Club Members

  • Intramural Sports team roster may include up to 2 sport club members for a sport related to their club for sports that require or less players and teams can have 3 sport club members if the sport requires 6 or more players. This shall include anyone who practices regularly with a club but does not participate in scheduled games, including both fall and spring semesters.

Ineligible Players

Any person participating with his or her name and ID number on a roster, or found in violation of the rules and regulations of Intramural Sports, is an ineligible player:

  • An ineligible person participating in an Intramural Sports activity shall be suspended from all intramural sports activities  and reinstated only after a meeting with the Coordinator of Recreational Sports.
  • Any games in which an ineligible player participated shall be forfeited.
  • A player competing under an assumed name will be suspended from Intramural Sports competition for the remainder of the school year and will be placed on probation for the following school year.
  • If a team knowingly plays with an ineligible player or intentionally attempts to break the rules, that team ill be dropped from the league and will not be eligible for playoffs.

Rosters

In order for an individual to be considered eligible for Intramural Sports competition, his or her name and Southern Miss ID number must appear on the team roster.

Competing on Two Teams

Participants may only compete on one men's (Independent or Fraternity) or women's (Independent or Sorority) team,in addition to one co-rec team, for any one given sport. If a player signs in on an team roster, they are considered to have played on that team for that game.

Roster Transfer

Participants may only transfer rosters if they have not played with team on whose roster their name originally appears.

Team Eligibility for Playoffs

In order for a team to be eligible for playoffs, it must finish the regular season with a "B" (3.0) average sportsmanship rating.

Captain's Meeting

Captain Meetings are intended to provide teams with a familiarity of rules, rules changes, USM IM policies and procedures and team schedules or brackets for the event in question.  These meetings are provided to enhance the quality and safety of the program and to offer teams the opportunity to ask questions concerning the event. Failure to have a representative at the Captain's Meeting will result in the team losing the right to any rules protest.

For all sports with playoff meetings, a representative from each team must be present to choose the team's position in the playoff bracket. Teams that fail to send a representative to the meeting forfeit their right to choose their bracket position and playoff schedule, and cannot protest their assigned position.
