Wisteria Circuit Training Room

The Wisteria Circuit Training Room, located on the second floor of the Payne Center, is a weight training circuit designed to be a concentrated, time-efficient, total body workout. Circuit training has both strength and cardiovascular benefits when performed properly. The Wisteria Circuit Training Room has eleven resistance machines and aerobic training stations. The muscle groups that are targeted in the circuit are the legs, buttocks, chest, back, arms, shoulders, abdominals and heart.

Steps to Circuit Training

  1. The Circuit is located in the Payne Center Wisteria Room 225.
  2. You are encouraged to attend a "fitting" Fitting times will be posted. If you are not able to make it to a fitting, then you should ask a staff person for a fitting during one of the open circuit times posted on the schedule.
  3. You will obtain a workout card during a fitting. Staff members will assist you with the appropriate seat adjustments and beginning weights to help you achieve the most beneficial workouts.
  4. Become familiar with the hours of the Circuit Training Room. Hours of operation are posted outside the Wisteria and printed on the flyers near the welcome center.
  5. Warm up and stretch. It is important that proper stretching and a light warm-up are completed before beginning your circuit training. The warm-up is necessary for preparing the body for more strenuous work and increasing muscle temperature. This decreases the possibility of injury and the early onset of muscle fatigue. If you attend a structure circuit class, the instructor will perform stretching before and after the circuit as part of the class.
  6. Follow the circuit pattern. Stay in the prescribed order - do not skip or repeat exercises. At each station in the Wisteria Room, users are to move from station to station for maximum workout efficiency.
  7. There should be no rapid lifting, which relies on momentum and may cause injury. We recommend a repetition count of one and a half seconds up and a half second down.
  8. Know when to increase weight. Once a user is able to properly lift a weight consistently and easily, the weight should be increased only one plate at a time.
  9. Use the target heart rate zone (thrz). It is recommended to take a pulse before and after performing the circuit. It is recommended that the heart rate stay between 55-85 percent of the Theoretical Heart Rate maximum during the workout. (Use the chart in the Wisteria to determine our heart rate).
  10. Breathe properly when performing the circuit. Exhale during the strenuous portion of the exercise and inhale during the less strenuous portion of the exercise. Do not hold your breath when performing the exercise.

Cool down after your workout in the circuit. Be sure to include some stretching after the workout in order to prevent muscle soreness and to improve flexibility.
