Welcome to the Learn To Swim program at The University of Southern Mississippi Recreational Sports, where we have a class for you! The Learn To Swim program provides class for all ages and skill levels. Our program offers classes taught by certified Red Cross Water safety Instructors and curriculum set by the American Red Cross.
LEVEL I - Elementary Aquatic Skills
This class includes such skills as water adjustment, buoyancy and breath control, bobbing, water entry/exit, locomotion in the water, and personal safety and rescue skills. This class is for Beginner Swimmers.
LEVEL II - Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Student is this class mst be able to perform all Level I skills. This class includes such skills as floating, alternating arm and leg actions, front crawl, back crawl, and personal safety and rescue skills. This class helps to lay the foundation for future strokes.
LEVEL III - Stroke Development
Students in this class must be able to perform all Level II skills. This class includes such skills as coordination of front crawl and back crawl, head-first entries, elementary backstroke, retrieval of objects from the bottom of the pool, reverse if direction while swimming, treading water, and personal safety and rescue skills. This class is for Advance Beginners.
LEVEL IV - Stroke Improvement
Students in this class must be able to perform all Level III skills. This class includes such skills as developing confidence in the he strokes, rotary breathing, diving, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, turning, endurance, and personal safety and rescue skills. This class is for Intermediate Swimmers.
LEVEL V - Stroke Refinement
Students in this class must be able to perform all Level IV skills. This class includes such skills as perfecting the mechanics of each stroke, alternate breathing, stride jump, advanced diving, breaststroke, sidestroke, under water swimming, elementary backstroke, butterfly, treading water, and personal safety and rescue skills.
LEVEL VI - Swimming and Skill Proficiency
Students in this class must be able to perform all Level V skills. This class is customized to meet the objectives of the participants. Students in this class will learn such skills as springboard diving, personal water safety, fitness swimming, and lifeguard readiness. This class is for swimmers who are ready to focus on advanced activities such as competitive diving and competitive swimming.
ADULT (age 13 years and older)
The adult class is open to adults of all ages and skill levels. Each student is evaluated on his/her skill level and is taught appropriate water skills based mostly on personal goals.
REGISTERATION
To register for Learn To Swim classes, complete the Learn To Swim registration form and waiver, then submit both with the class fee to the Sales office. please make sure to get a receipt. The registration period will end approximately five (5) days prior to the session. Registration after the deadline will include a late registration fee of $10. Late registration will only be taken if space is available. On the first night of class, please check in a the registration table in the pool area.
CLASS FEES
- $75 per participant, per session
- $65 per participant, per session for Payne Center Members
- $65 per participant, per session for multiple family members
- add $10 per participant, per session for LATE REGISTRATION
DON'T FORGET:
- All fees must be paid in full at the time of registration.
- Students may NOT enter the water prior to lesson times.
- Students should use the Natatorium entrance to Turk Circle for swim lesson admission.
- No refunds or rollover will be granted after the first week of classes.
- All Students must wear appropriate swim attire. Students may also want to wear a swim cap and goggles.
- Students must be at least 5 years of age for participation.
- Make-up Days will be used in case class must be cancelled by Recreational Sports. They are not used for times when participants miss class on their own accord
