Intramural Sports Program
2007 Volleyball
All Intramural participants are responsible for their own medical expenses. Any participant unsure of his/her physical condition should check with his/her physician or the University Clinic before participating in an Intramural Sports contest.
Teams are responsible for keeping their spectators under control. Misconduct of participants, coaches or spectators can result in an unsportsmanlike penalty, ejection or forfeiture of the game. Team Captains will be held responsible for spectator, team and sideline misconduct. Two ejections from any contest will result in an automatic forfeiture.
Intramural Officials are in absolute control of the game. Officials and Supervisors shall have the power to make decisions on all matters and questions not specifically covered in the rules.
National Federation of State High School Associations rules will govern play for any rules not mentioned in the following Intramural rules:
1. Eligibility and Roster Information
A current
Southern Miss I.D. must be presented to the supervisor at game time. NO I.D. - NO PLAY- NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!
Teams must have a minimum of 4 players to start a game. A maximum of 6 players are allowed on the court during game play.
2. Equipment

Every Participant must wear proper athletic attire, including athletic footwear—no open-toed shoes may be worn.
Teams are encouraged to wear numbered shirts of similar color, but there is no team uniform requirement.
3. Length of Game and Timing
Teams will play best of 3 games. The first two games will be played to 25 and teams must win by 2 points.
If a third game is played, the first team to reach 15 points shall be the winner.
Rally scoring will be used during all matches.
Teams shall have 2 time-outs for each of the first two games and 1 for the third game.
If the score is 14-14 in the third game, both teams shall receive another time-out.
4. Game Play
The Serve
In the act of serving, the server may stand anywhere behind the end line, but must be within the sidelines, extended out-of-bounds.
The server must serve with one hand, fist or arm, and the ball may be in the air or resting when it is served. The ball may not visibly come to rest on the serving arm in the process of serving.
Legal serves that contact any part of the net in-bounds and continues onto the opponent’s court shall be a legal serve.
A team shall have no more than three consecutive hits before the ball is transferred to the opponent’s side of the court or is touched by an opponent.
A block does not count as a team contact.
Simultaneous contact by two players of the same team shall count as one team contact, and either played may make the next contact.
If players from opposing teams contact the ball simultaneously, the team whose side of the net the ball falls into will have three team contacts available.
The ball may not visibly come to rest on any part of the body and any ball contact below the waist, intentional or otherwise, shall be a dead ball.
No player may contact the net during the play. EXCEPTION: if the force of the ball into the net causes the net to come into contact with another player, the ball shall remain live.
Front Row and Back Row Players
Players in the front row may perform an attack and may play the ball anywhere on the court. Players in the back row may attack the ball behind the 10-foot line or may play the ball in front of the 10-foot line, provided that the ball is below the top of the net.
If a back leaves the floor behind the 10-foot line, they may perform an attack in front of the line.
A back row player may not block in front of the 10-foot line.
There shall be no inclusion of the libero position.
Teams must rotate clockwise when they receive possession of the serve. Upon the first side out, a team may choose whether to rotate.
Players may not block the serve.
5. Sportsmanship
UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT: Any unsportsmanlike conduct including, but not limited to, arguments with officials (the captain is the only player permitted to talk with the officials) by any coach, manager or spectator, flagrant fouling, fighting, etc. may result in expulsion of that individual and/or team from further participation in that scheduled volleyball game.
Two yellow cards or 1 red card will result in a disqualification. A disqualified player will not be allowed a substitute, and that team will play short-handed for the remainder of the game. Three yellow cards on a team ends the match and a forfeit will be awarded.
6. Co-Rec Clarifications
Teams will consist of 3 men and 3 women. Teams must have at least 4 players (2 male and 2 female) ready to play by game time to avoid a forfeit.
Teams with 5 players may play 2 men and 3 women, or 3 men and 2 women.
No teams may play with 4 of one gender and 2 of another.
Teams must alternate sexes in the rotation.
If there are multiple and consecutive team contacts during a rally, both a male and female must contact the ball. The contacts need not alternate sexes (man-man-woman, for example, is a legal succession of contacts).
7. Forfeit Policy
If a team fails to appear with the required minimum number of players, ready to play, at the scheduled location at the scheduled start of the game, a member of the Intramural Sports Staff will declare the contest a forfeit. Teams that forfeit will receive an ‘F’ for sportsmanship and will be required to pay $15 to the Recreational Sports Office prior to the registration of any other intramural sports teams. Teams are only allowed one forfeit per sport per season. If a team forfeits twice, it will be removed from the league for the remainder of the season.
8. Default Policy
If a team knows that they will be unable to play a scheduled game, the Team Captain must contact the Intramural Sports Office by 12:00 PM the day of the contest to declare a default. The defaulting team will receive a loss and a ‘B’ for sportsmanship. There is no re-entry fee for a default.
