Vafa Kamali, Ph.D. — Biography

Dr. Vafa Kamali is the Director of University Research Centers and Institutes.

Formerly he was the Associate Dean for Administration and Research for the College of Health. Prior to joining USM, with the Mississippi Department of Health, Dr. Kamali was the Director of the Office of Science and Evaluation and supervised the divisions of primary care, grant management, and tobacco prevention. He established a framework for evaluation and trained the managerial staff of MSDH to adapt the framework for all grants. He has extensive research experience and 30 years of achievements in plant and human genetics involving isolation and cloning novel genes, toxicology studies, the establishment of tissue banks for human metabolic diseases, the coordination and developmental work of stem cell proliferation factor, the management of multidisciplinary human genetic project teams, regulatory affairs, and biological and environmental safety regulations.

Dr. Kamali has served as an instructor of biostatistics, ethics, patient compliance and environmental safety in the School of Dental Medicine, and an instructor of biology in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. He has over 30 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, as well as a patent for a novel gene. He has worked in government and in the private sector and has owned and operated his own private business.

Dr. Kamali holds a bachelor's and a master's degree in general agricultural engineering from the University of Azarabayejan in his native country of Iran. He obtained a post graduate diploma in plant breeding in Svalov, Sweden, and completed his master's and doctoral degrees in agronomy and plant physiology at North Dakota State University. In addition to his education in biological sciences, Dr. Kamali completed a master's degree in marriage and family therapy at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
