Derek Patton, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor, School of Polymers and High Performance Materials

The Patton Research Group focuses on three core research areas, including 1) polymer surface engineering, 2) photopolymerization of functional polymer networks, and 3) polybenzoxazine thermoset chemistries. Projects in the group are hypothesis driven and focus primarily on new materials design. A selection of ongoing research projects are listed below:

1) Bio-inspired design of superhydrophobic and superoleophobic materials
2) Mussel-inspired design of polymer-based adhesives and sealants
3) Thole-mediated reactions for polymer surface engineering
4) Design of flexible and functional polybenzoxazine thermosets

Undergraduate researchers are actively involved in every project within the Patton Research Group, and as a result, many of our peer-reviewed articles are published with undergraduates as contributing coauthors.
