Adequate training is the key to ensure a safe research, working and teaching environment. The training modules offered on the EH&S site are structured to meet basic and specialized training requirements and to provide a training record for the Laboratory Management Plan (LMP). Each training session has a quiz and in some cases a certificate is generated upon completion. Either of these documents can be used as the training record for the LMP. The module entitled “Introduction to Lab Safety” is strongly recommended for every person working in a laboratory at The University of Southern Mississippi. Specialized training modules are required where applicable.
General Lab Safety: Follow the link to Lab Safety Workspace website. http://labsafetyworkspace.org/ Click on the Course Directory and select a course from their directory. The course called Introduction to Lab Safety is an excellent course for new student researchers. Registered participants will receive a certificate upon course completion that can be used in the Lab Management Plan (LMP).
Radiation Safety: All potential new users of radioactivity MUST take the Blackboard course on Radiation Safety at (Laboratory Radiation Safety Course). Once you have taken the course on Blackboard, register to take the quiz with EH&S here. A passing score of 70% is required to become an approved user by the department of EHS.
Current approved users can renew approval annually by taking the Radiation Refresher Quiz (here). It is acceptable to use the Radiation Users Guideline in the Resources section of EHS website.
Biosafety: All researchers working with biological agents are strongly recommended to take the CITI course module called “Risk Assessment Work Practices”. This module is designed to supplement the curriculum of CHE 410/510 and PSC 410/510. Other helpful CITI courses are available are the Biosafety Overview, Safe Sharp Devices and Universal Precautions and Work Practices.
*Note: Any researchers working in a BSL3 lab must demonstrate proficiency to EHS in a mock work through (without select agent). Passing researchers will receive a Certificate of Proficiency from EHS that should be placed in the Lab Management Plan. Only researchers with a certificate of Proficiency are allowed to work with select agent.
