The Mississippi Gulf Coast is home not only to the Gulf Park Campus of the University of Southern Mississippi, but also to a number of important marine research facilities. The Gulf Coast Research Laboratory serves as the main hub for all coastal and marine research, in areas such as fisheries, geospatial technologies, marine aquaculture, environmental assessment, marine toxicology, and marine microbiology, and includes the Cedar Point expansion, where marine aquaculture research and development focuses on marine finfish and shrimp.
Southern Miss' research presence on the Gulf Coast extends
to NASA's John C. Stennis Space Center, home of the Department
of Marine Sciences and its research centers: the Center for
Trace Analysis; the Central Gulf Ocean Observing System; the
Hydrographic Science Research Center; and the Undersea Vehicle
Technology Center.
