Applicants must have been admitted to or be currently registered at Southern Miss as either a full-time undergraduate student (taking 12 hours) or a full-time graduate student (taking 9 hours).

The primary reason for the applicant's being in this geographical area must be for the purpose of pursuing an education at Southern Miss.

  • Additionally, the applicant must meet one of the following criteria
  • Be married and living with spouse
  • Be married and living with spouse and at least one legally dependant child
  • Be a single parent and living with at least one legally dependant child
  • Be a single graduate student living alone in a one bedroom apartment.

Only immediate members of the applicant's family are eligible to live in the apartment unit (husband or wife and legally dependant children).

Proof of eligibility must be presented before accepting an apartment unit. Applicants should be able to provide the appropriate documents upon request.

  • Married couples must furnish a copy of their marriage certificate.
  • Married couples with children must furnish a copy of their marriage certificate and a birth certificate for each child.
  • A divorced parent must furnish a decree of divorce showing full custody of the children who will be residing in Pine Haven.
  • A single parent separated from spouse must furnish a documentation showing full custody of the children who will be residing in Pine Haven.
    A single parent with no spouse must show proof that child resides with them at Pine Haven.

When an applicant's name reaches the top of the waiting list, the next available apartment of the type requested will be offered.

An assignment letter will be sent to the applicant.

When the assignment letter is receieved, it must be returned to the Pine Haven office no later than the date specified. If the assignment is rejected, the applicant still must return the assignment letter by the date specified and request that the deposit be refunded or the application be kept for a future semester.

Applicants who accept the assignment but later decide not to occupy the apartment will forfeit the $75 deposit.

After an apartment is occupied, the only moves authorized are

  • When there is a change in family size;
  • When the present apartment size is smaller than the eligible apartment size; or
  • For medical reasons when prescribed by a doctor and approved by the assistant director for Family and Special Interest Housing.
